چکیده

The Demand for Labor: An Analysis Using Matched EmployerEmployee Data from the German LIAB. Will the High Unskilled Worker Own-Wage Elasticity Please Stand Up? This paper uses matched employee-employer LIAB data to provide panel estimates of the structure of labor demand in Germany, 1993-2002, distinguishing between highly skilled, skilled, and unskilled labor and between the manufacturing and service sectors. Reflecting current preoccupations, our demand analysis seeks also to accommodate the impact of technology and trade in addition to wages. The bottom-line interests are to provide elasticities of the demand for unskilled (and other) labor that should assist in short-run policy design and to identify the extent of skill biases or otherwise in trade and technology. Exporting and Labor Demand: Micro-level Evidence from Germany

It is widely believed that globalization affects the extent of employment and wage responses to economic shocks. To provide evidence for this, we analyze the effect of firms’ exporting behavior on the elasticity of labor demand. Using rich, German administrative linked employer-employee panel data from 1996 to 2008, we explicitly control for self-selection into exporting and endogeneity concern...

SKILL-BIASED TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE, INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND THE WAGE STRUCTURE New evidence on the determinants of the employment structure from linked employer-employee panel data for Germany

During the last two decades, the labour demand structure in Germany and other OECD countries has experienced a decrease in the demand for low skilled and a rise in the demand for highly skilled employees. The adoption of modern technologies in the production process as well as the growth of international trade are often regarded as the main driving factors behind this change. On the other hand,...

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data We estimate wage and job tenure functions that include individual and firm effects capturing time-invariant unobserved worker and firm heterogeneity using German linked employeremployee data (LIAB data set). We find that both types of heterogeneity are correlated to the ...

The Long-Run Demand for Skilled and Unskilled Labor in Colombian Manufacturing Plants

This note estimates the long-run demand for skilled and unskilled labor using panel data for Colombian manufacturing plants. Unobserved heterogeneity and measurement error problems that commonly arise in microdata production estimates are examined. Output measurement errors cause OLS estimators to underestimate the output and wage response of employment demand. Time-difference estimators exagge...

Do Initial Conditions Persist Between Firms? An Analysis of Firm-Entry Cohort Effects and Job Losers using Matched Employer-Employee Data

Influential studies have suggested that initial conditions can have persistent effects on workers’ careers within firms. It is a longstanding question among economists whether such lasting wage differentials among firms and industries are due to persistent deviations of wages from workers’ skills due to contracting and market frictions, or whether they arise from permanent differences among wor...
